Salmo 132

Señor, acuérdate de David y de todos sus problemas.

Recuerda todo lo que te prometió

y dijo que haría para ti, el Poderoso Dios de Jacob.

«No entraré a mi casa, ni me iré a la cama,

no me dormiré, ni siquiera tomaré un breve descanso,

hasta que encuentre un lugar dónde edificar una casa

para el Señor, el Fuerte Dios de Jacob».

¿Recuerdan cuando escuchamos la noticia en Efrata;

y corría el rumor en los Campos del Bosque?

Recuerdan cuando decíamos:

¡Vamos a la inauguración! ¡Vamos a adorar al Señor en su nueva casa!

Levántate, Señor, disfruta tu nueva, espaciosa y tranquila casa,

mira con amor el Arca, símbolo de tus promesas.

Que tus sacerdotes se vistan de justicia

y quienes te adoran canten esta oración:

«Por amor de David tu siervo no vuelvas de tu ungido el rostro».

El Señor dio a David su palabra y no la olvidará:

«A uno de tus hijos pondré sobre tu trono. Si tus hijos guardan mi pacto

y viven de la manera que les he enseñado;

los hijos de ellos también se sentarán sobre tu trono para siempre»,

 ¡Así es! Porque Jehová ha escogido a Sión como el lugar para su casa.

Él ha dicho: «Este lugar será mi hogar. ¡Aquí viviré!

Aquí bendeciré abundantemente a quienes venga a adorarme;

y daré de comer a quienes vengan con hambre.

Vestiré de salvación a mis sacerdotes y los creyentes cantarán con alegría.

Haré retoñar el poder de David; iluminaré con luz radiante a mi ungido.

A sus enemigos los vestiré con ropas viejas, pero haré que su corona brille con esplendor».

He visto a familias que buscan la casa del Señor - y a sus pastores- solamente en momentos de mucha necesidad o en circunstancias especiales. Por ejemplo, cuando van a casarse o cuando muere un ser querido. La religión para ellos es para esos tiempos de emergencia. Cuando es absolutamente necesario. Mientras tanto no se acuerdan de Dios.

Quizá usted mismo ha hecho lo mismo. Si hace memoria -y dudo mucho que lo haya olvidado - como alguna vez hizo algunas promesas al Señor. Quizá algo sencillo como leer su Biblia, tener su momento diario con Dios, dar sus diezmos, asistir puntualmente a la iglesia o hacer algún servicio para él. Pero ay, qué pena... no ha podido cumplir. Se consuela y se justifica a sí mismo diciendo: “... el Señor conoce todo lo que me pasa”.

El Salmo 132 trata con la obediencia de David, el cumplimiento de sus votos o promesas hechas al Señor. El recordaba bien lo que había prometido y cuando dijo:

«No entraré a mi casa, ni me iré a la cama, no me dormiré, ni siquiera tomaré un breve descanso, hasta que encuentre un lugar dónde edificar una casa para el Señor, el Fuerte Dios de Jacob».

Una promesa con testigos

Cuando David hizo su promesa (de encontrar un lugar para el Arca del Pacto), la hizo en medio de todos los problemas en los cuales se encontraba, y delante de muchas personas que escucharon sus palabras. La promesa de David consistió en encontrar un lugar para el ARCA del PACTO. Símbolo de la presencia de Dios con su pueblo.

El Arca había acompañado al pueblo de Israel desde el Sinaí y había sido traída hasta Silo y dejada en ese lugar desde el tiempo de la conquista de Canaán.

El Arca era el símbolo de la presencia del Señor, un símbolo no la realidad; y, sin embargo, David hizo su pacto a Dios delante del Arca. Imagino que cada vez que pensaba en ella, recordaba su compromiso, una promesa, un voto hecho delante de Dios.  El día cuando David cumplió la promesa de trasladar el arca hizo una celebración tan extraordinaria que todo el pueblo lo acompañó con gritos de alegría y sonido de trompetas (2 Samuel 6:14-15).

Los cristianos nos podemos identificar con los cantores de este Salmo 132. A veces corremos hacia Dios y le hacemos votos en medio de nuestros problemas; otras veces los hacemos como una expresión de amor, de alegría o de celebración por alguna bendición recibida.

En cierto modo, el Salmo 132 era un “memorando ” para que el pueblo de Israel recordara que debían obedecer y cumplir con las promesas, compromisos y votos que habían hecho ante el Señor.

Una promesa que recuerda otras promesas

Hacer y cumplir con nuestras promesas a Dios no es un cumplimiento frío y sin sentimientos. Más bien cuando usted cumple su promesa esta habla al corazón de Dios y le hace recordar que él también ha hecho algunas promesas.

Muchas veces me he preguntado: ¿Qué promesas habrá hecho el Señor acerca de mí? ¿Qué tiene el Señor para mí y yo no lo he reclamado porque no he cumplido mis promesas?

Cuando cumplimos nuestras promesas no solamente recordamos el pasado, sino que es mucho más, miramos con fe, con entusiasmo y optimismo hacia el futuro, miramos hacia Dios. Nos damos cuenta de lo que Dios ha dicho y prometido y nos acercamos para reclamar esas promesas.

Oración

Señor, yo quiero como David llegar a casa hoy, no acostarme a dormir, no darme tregua hasta que haya cumplido con las promesas que he expresado delante de ti. Amén.

Reflexión y acción

¿Recuerdas alguna promesa que has hecho al Señor? Renueva tu compromiso de cumplirla cueste lo que cueste.

Que Dios te bendiga es el deseo de mi corazón hoy y mi oración por ti hoy.

Whatever the cost

Psalm 132

Lord, remember David and all his troubles.

Remember everything he promised you

and said that he would do for you, the Mighty God of Jacob.

"I will not enter my house, nor go to bed,

I won't fall asleep, I won't even take a short break

until I find a place to build a house

to the Lord, the Mighty God of Jacob."

Do you remember when we heard the news in Efrata.

and the rumor was spreading in the Forest Fields?

Remember when we said:

Let's go to the inauguration! Let's worship the Lord in His new home!

Arise, Lord, enjoy your new, spacious, quiet home,

look with love at the Ark, the symbol of your promises.

Let your priests put on righteousness

and let those who worship you sing this prayer:

"For the sake of your servant David, do not turn your face away from your anointed."

The Lord gave David his word and he will not forget it:

"I will put one of your sons on your throne. If your children keep my covenant

and they live in the way I have taught them.

their children will also sit on your throne forever,"

 That's right! For Jehovah has chosen Zion as the place for his home.

He has said, "This place will be my home. Here I will live!

Here I will abundantly bless those who come to worship me.

and I will feed those who come hungry.

I will clothe my priests with salvation, and the believers will sing with joy.

I will make David's power sprout; I will illuminate my anointed one with radiant light.

I will clothe his enemies in old clothes, but I will make his crown shine brightly."

A Paraphrase - Jorge E. Díaz

I have seen families seeking the house of the Lord—and their pastors—only in times of great need or in special circumstances. For example, when they are going to get married or when a loved one dies. Religion for them is for those times of emergency. When absolutely necessary. Meanwhile they do not remember God.

Perhaps you yourself have done the same. If you remember—and I doubt very much that you have forgotten – how you made some promises to the Lord. Maybe it was something simple like reading your Bible, having your daily time with God, giving your tithes, attending church on time, or doing something to serve him. But alas, what a shame... You have not been able to comply. You comfort and justify yourself by saying, "... the Lord knows everything that happens to me."

Psalm 132 deals with David's obedience, the fulfillment of his vows or promises made to the Lord. He remembered well what he had promised and when he said:

"I will not go into my house, nor go to bed, I will not sleep, nor will I even take a short rest, until I find a place to build a house for the Lord, the Mighty God of Jacob."

A promise with witnesses

When David made his promise (to find a place for the Ark of the Covenant), he made it in the midst of all the problems he was in— and to top it off there were many people who listened to his words. He said it in front of many people. David's promise was to find a place for the Ark of the Covenant, the symbol of God's presence with his people.

The Ark had accompanied the people of Israel from Sinai and had been brought to Shiloh and left there since the time of the conquest of Canaan.

The Ark was the symbol of the presence of the Lord, a symbol not the real thing; and yet David made his covenant to God before the Ark. I imagine that every time he thought of her, he remembered his commitment, a promise, a vow he made before God.  The day David fulfilled his promise to move the ark, he made such an extraordinary celebration that all the people joined him with shouts of joy and the sound of trumpets (2 Samuel 6:14-15).

Christians can identify with the singers of this Psalm 132. Sometimes we run to God and make vows to Him in the midst of our problems; other times we do them as an expression of love, joy or celebration for some blessing received.

In a way, Psalm 132 was a "reminder" to the people of Israel that they were to obey and fulfill the promises, commitments, and vows they had made before the Lord.

A promise that recalls other promises

Making and keeping our promises to God is not a cold, unfeeling fulfillment. Rather, when you keep your promise, it speaks to God's heart and reminds you that He has also made some other promises.

I have often wondered: What promises did the Lord make about me? What does the Lord have for me that I haven't claimed because I haven't kept my promises?

When we keep our promises, we not only remember the past, but much more, we look with faith, with enthusiasm and optimism to the future, we look to God. We realize what God has said and promised and reach out to claim those promises.

Prayer

Lord, I want much like David to come home today, not to lie down to sleep, but to not have rest until I have fulfilled the promises I have expressed before you. Amen.

Reflection and action

Remember a promise you have made to the Lord?  Renew your commitment to keep it at all costs no matter what.
