Otra forma de decir “Sí”

Cuando el Señor así lo indicaba, los israelitas acampaban o se ponían en marcha. Así cumplían la orden del Señor, según lo que el Señor había dicho por medio de Moisés.

Cuando recibí la invitación para colaborar con la Casa Bautista de Publicaciones me encontraba en Costa Rica en medio de un programa de mejoramiento para profesores de los Seminarios Bautista de Centro América. Ofrecí a la persona que me llamó, que le daría alguna respuesta al volver a mi país y conversar con mi esposa e hija.

Tengo que confesar que en principio no me interesó la invitación. Ya estaba haciendo y viviendo lo que yo había imaginado para mi vida casi desde mi niñez: ser un profesor de Biblia y enseñar en la Universidad Nacional. Mi esposa estaba muy contenta en la casa donde vivíamos y mi hija tenía una escuela privada cristiana. Así que cambiar de lugar o de trabajo era impensable. Dios tendría que ser muy claro o mostrarme una señal para que yo dijera “sí”. 

Comenzamos a orar a Dios. Pasaron varios días y cada vez que nos llamaban pidiendo una respuesta, yo decía, “estamos orando sobre su invitación, pero si tiene prisa, busque a otra persona”.

En cierto momento después de orar, mi esposa dijo: “¿Si Dios nos está llamado y nosotros estamos desobedeciendo?”. Se me ocurrió que pusiéramos “una señal” como lo hizo un amigo del Antiguo Testamento llamado Gedeón. Sinceramente, esperaba que no hubiera ninguna señal pues estaba más que contento con mi vida. ¿Cambiar de país, dejar a mis amigos, hermanos, cultura y estilo de vida para ir a un lugar desconocido, en otro contexto socio cultural y académico? había que pensarlo muy bien.

Dios respondió y tuvimos la señal. Ahora sabíamos lo que teníamos que hacer… preparar nuestras maletas, abandonar a nuestras familias y literalmente “volar” a otro lugar.

Pienso en aquella época cada vez que leo el relato de los israelitas en el Antiguo Testamento (Números 9:15-23). Viajaban hacia la Tierra Prometida. Sólo que el viaje no estaba claramente trazado ante ellos. No conocían el destino exacto ni el camino por el que Dios les guiaría. Dios los orientó por medio de una nube sobre el tabernáculo. Cuando la nube se levantaba, los israelitas hacían las maletas y seguían la nube, fuera de día o de noche. Durante la noche, el Señor proporcionó un fuego en la nube. Cuando se detenía, ellos se detuvieron.

Fue una vida de fe, como explica nuestro versículo para la Reflexión de hoy: "A la orden del Señor acamparon, y a la orden del Señor se pusieron en marcha. Obedecieron la orden del Señor, conforme a su mandato por medio de Moisés" (Números 9:23).

Dios sabía lo que le esperaba a su pueblo elegido, y eso es lo que el Señor hizo por mí. Tuve que cambiar mis prioridades, el trabajo, y la rutina de la vida diaria. Dios me liberó de una vida dirigida por mí y me mostró la belleza de una vida guiada por él.

Dios transformó mi corazón, mi fe y a mi familia a través de ese primer y duro “sí”. En todos estos años he aprendido que Dios rara vez me da un mapa o un GPS para mi próxima misión. Él simplemente me dice que me mueva y espera mi sí.

Aunque obedecer da miedo, Dios ha demostrado su fidelidad. Incluso cuando parece que me dirijo hacia lo desconocido, es sólo porque mi vista es limitada. Dios conoce sus buenos planes para mí; sólo quiere que confíe en él. Y cada vez que lo hago, el resultado es mejor de lo que jamás podría imaginar.

El cambio no fue fácil, a veces sentí un fuerte deseo de devolverme a la tierra donde crecí. Dios me ha dado alegría y paz, me ha quitado el miedo que me mantuvo atado durante años y mi fe ha crecido. Aunque sea una paradoja, he aprendido esta verdad: Cuanto más difícil es decir el sí, mayor es mi bendición.

Querido Señor, gracias por tener buenos planes para mí. Ayúdame a aprender a escuchar atentamente tu próxima asignación y a obedecer con un corazón alegre, aunque no sepa adónde me llevas, pero tengo la absoluta seguridad que será de gran bendición para mí’. En el nombre de Jesús, amén.

Another way to say "Yes"

When the Lord so directed, the Israelites would camp or set out. Thus, they carried out the command of the Lord, according to what the Lord had said through Moses.

When I was invited to work jointly with the Baptist Spanish Publishing House, I was in Costa Rica in the middle of an improvement program for teachers of the Baptist Seminaries of Central America. I told the caller that I would give him an answer when I returned to my country and talked to my wife and daughter.

I must confess that I was initially not interested in the invitation. I was already doing and living what I had envisioned for my life almost since childhood: being a Bible teacher and teaching at the National University. My wife was pleased in the house where we lived and my daughter attended a private Christian school. So changing places or jobs was unthinkable. God would have to be very clear or show me a big sign for me to say "yes." 

We began to pray to God. Several days went by and every time they called us asking for an answer, I would say, "We are praying about your invitation, but if you are in a hurry, find someone else."

At a certain point after praying, my wife said, “What if God is calling us and we are disobeying?" It occurred to me that we should ask for a sign from God “a sign" as an Old Testament friend named Gideon did. Honestly, I hoped there would be no sign because I was more than happy with my life. To change country, to leave my friends, siblings, culture, and lifestyle to go to an unknown place, in another socio-cultural and school context? I had to think about it very carefully.

God answered and we had the sign. Now we knew what we had to do... packing our bags, abandoning our families, and literally "flying" somewhere else.

I think of that time every time I read the story of the Israelites in the Old Testament (Numbers 9:15-23). They were traveling toward the Promised Land. However, the journey was not laid out before them. They did not know the exact destination or the path by which God would lead them. God directed them through a cloud over the Tabernacle. When the cloud went up, the Israelites packed their bags and followed the cloud, day or night. During the night, the Lord provided a fire in the cloud. When the cloud stopped, they stopped.

It was a life of faith, as our verse for today's Reflection explains: "At the command of the Lord they encamped, and at the command of the Lord they set out. They obeyed the command of the Lord, according to his command through Moses" (Numbers 9:23).

God knew what awaited His chosen people, and he knew there had to be some changes in me.  He had to show me, and that is what the Lord

did for me. I had to change my priorities, my work, and my daily life routine. God freed me from a life led by me and showed me the beauty of a life led by him.

God transformed my heart, my faith, and my family through that first hard "yes." In all these years I have learned that God rarely gives me a map or GPS for my next mission. He simply tells me to move and waits for my “yes.”

Although obedience is sometimes terrifying, God has demonstrated His faithfulness. Even when I seem to be heading into the unknown, it's only because my vision is limited. God knows His good plans for me. he just wants me to trust him. And every time I do, the result is better than I could ever imagine.

The change was not easy, at times I felt a strong desire to return to the land where I grew up. However, God has given me joy and peace, he has taken away the fear that kept me bound for many years and my faith has grown. Although it is a paradox, I have learned this truth: The harder it is to say “Yes”, the greater my blessing will be.

Dear Lord, thank You for having good plans for me. Help me learn to listen carefully to your next assignment and to obey with a cheerful heart, even if I don't know where you're taking me. In Jesus' name, amen.
